Janet Faye Winter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Winter of near Lincolnville, was the first baby born in 1956 at St. Luke Hospital. She weighed 7 pounds 9 ounces.

It was almost like old home week in the early hours Tuesday morning at the courthouse when yearly seekers of low license tag numbers gathered in the corridor to wait for the county treasurer’s office to open. Virgil Allen, rural Marion, was the first to arrive and received tag No. 1.

Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Pierce invited members of the Lakeside Square Dance Club to their home Saturday evening for a New Years Eve party and dance. The party was in the large recreation room in the basement of the Pierce home.

Even though Marion had to be content with sixth place in the invitational Jayhawk League basketball tournament in Wamego over the holidays, Marion senior Larry Schlehuber was the outstanding player of the tournament as he set six individual tournament records.

Only one person, Mrs. Hugh Gardner of Marion, was present to claim the fourth-place prize of $5 in this week’s Cash Day drawing. First place prize at next Wednesday’s drawing will be $140.
