American Legions will have Veterans Day events

Members of the Peabody American Legion, the Legion Auxiliary, and the Sons of the Legionnaires will host a catfish fry at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Legion. The event is a fundraiser to help pay for repairs to their damaged building façade.

The menu for the fish fry includes baked beans, scalloped potatoes, and bread.

“We will cook fish until it is gone,” said event coordinator Myrna Wood.

At 8 p.m. there will be an auction of specialty items with the proceeds also going to the building fund.

The band Splat will begin playing at 9 p.m.

The cost for the meal and dance is $10 per person.

On Sunday, Veterans Day, the Auxiliary will host a celebration to honor the country’s veterans. There will be a meal of chili and desserts and serving will begin at noon, with cost by donation.

At 12:30 p.m., Valen Sladek will sing the National Anthem. Valen is the 13-year old daughter of former Burns resident and PBHS graduate, Samantha Gomez Sladek. Valen won a competition to perform the National Anthem before several Shocker basketball games this winter.

Musical entertainment for the afternoon will be Robin Roberts and Billie Preston, a folk and bluegrass duo from Wichita. They will begin at 1 p.m.

Local organizations have been invited to prepare baskets for a silent auction. Funds raised at this event will go to the organization that entered the basket. Bidding will take place from noon until 2:30.

“We hope everyone will come support the Legion building fund and our veteran’s,” said Wood.

Guests are reminded to use the back door to enter the American Legion.
