GOESSEL:   Bluebird runners want success

Contributing writer

It is not often that a sense of humor is a major element of a team’s, but Goessel cross-country coach Tyler Schroeder said, “There is no doubt that this group’s camaraderie and sense of humor will benefit this team as they make strides to return to state.”

Four runners on this year’s boys’ team participated at Wamego in the state cross-country meet in 2012. Seniors Heath Goertzen, Jake Herrel, and Ben Wiens will give leadership to this year’s team. Sophomore Zach Wiens also competed at the prestigious race in late October.

Other runners expected to contribute at the varsity level this year will be Dane Kruger and Aaron Woelk.

“We talk to each other when running and sometimes even sing,” smiled Herrel.

“Running on grass is much better than running in circles on the track,” Goertzen said.

Kylee Unruh, a sophomore, will be the only returning girls’ letter-winner from last year. As a freshman, she completed the 4-kilometer race under 19 minutes several times, with hopes to improve this season.

“I find running enjoyable,” she said. “It helps me clear my mind.”

The Bluebird season begins Sept. 5 at Clearwater. Most races for the boys will be 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) and the girls will be 4 kilometers (2.5 miles).
