Class prepares students for future

Staff writer

To Lois Smith, understanding one’s financial plan is one of the more important things people should do.

A former business teacher, Smith’s Good Sense Money Management workshop Sunday was designed to help students develop a financial plan while still respecting biblical principles.

Smith teaches the class at different times of the year for adults and students.

“I read among my materials there are 800 references in the Bible to money,” she said. “You see a lot of it in Proverbs, where it talks about using money wisely.”

Smith covered five different areas of finance — earning, giving, saving, debt, and spending.

“One of the things I emphasize is spend your money at the beginning of the month — on paper, on purpose — before you actually start spending it,” Smith said.

Only three students, each currently in college, attended the workshop, listening and asking question about their financial futures.

Smith said she only wanted to give the students general information so they could begin working on a spending plan before graduation.

“This is just a crash-course,” Smith said. “I’m going to suggest each of them take a class at their college, and I’ve checked out what’s available for all three of them.”
