County 4-Hers are off to state fair

Staff writer

Numerous area 4-Hers are planning to take projects to the Kansas State Fair.

Brooke Nafziger, an 8-year member of Goessel Goal Getters 4-H, will take her self-portrait drawing that won grand champion at the county fair and a dress she sewed that also took honors.

Visual arts and clothing are her favorite projects among the many she’s tried over the years, Brooke said. This will be the sixth year Brooke has exhibited at the state fair.

At last year’s state fair, her drawing was chosen for display at Rock Springs 4-H camp. It will be returned to her this year.

“I like that 4-H introduces you to so many opportunities and new things to try,” Brooke said.

She likes camps, leadership opportunities, and trying new projects.

“The skills and information you can gain from 4-H will always be something you can take with you,” Brooke said.

Trudy Hein, a member of South Cottonwood 4-H, will display a photo of her brother, Bo, a sewn seal, and a Kentucky butter cake.

The sixth-grader has been a 4-H member for five years and likes both getting to make things and learning from the experience.

Dustyn Gaddis will display a photo of an orange and yellow frog and chocolate chip cookies at the state fair.

He’s taken projects to state fair five of the six years he’s been a member of Goessel Goal Getters.

“I like being with friends, cooking, taking stuff to fairs and learning new stuff,” Dustyn said.

The state fair runs Friday through Sept. 17 at the fairgrounds in Hutchinson.
