New city clerk/administrator Jeff Benbrook of Wichita will begin work Sept. 2 on a one-year contract, subject to quarterly reviews.

The annual Farmers Market dinner in Santa Fe Park was sold out a week in advance for the third straight year.

Mackenzie and Bryant Young are pleased to announce the birth of their baby brother, Philip David Roy Young.

Aug. 25, 1988

Max Davis and son Dean, of Walton, were program guests at the Peabody Senior Center covered dish dinner last week. These men entertained the crowd with the accounts of driving in the 1988 Road Rally (Great American Race) across the USA.

Mrs. Elma Koslowsky has returned from a two-week vacation in California where she visited with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Melson in Santa Maria.

Guests of Larry and Ruth Bull last week were Mrs. Bull’s father, Orie Davis and her stepmother, Gail Davis of Macon, Georgia.

Aug. 29, 1963

Mr. and Mrs. Charles DeForest have moved into the late Hattie Snyder house on Walnut Street the past week.

Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bentz of Oklahoma City report they will be at the Hutchinson and Topeka fairs this year with a “boiled cookies” concession. He is the brother of Harold Bentz.

Indications are that an early start can be expected on construction of the new Marion County Home in Peabody.

Aug. 27, 1913

The jury finds Miss Hannah Crawford is not feeble minded. It appeared she had shown more than usual ability to look out for herself financially, but she is getting old and often needs help at home which she sometimes has not been able to secure.

Miss Mary Wilcox of Newton was guest this week of Misses Mildred and Lucy Sands.

Edna, the second daughter of C.I. Tibbins, is recovering from a mild attack of typhoid fever.

Aug. 22, 1888

Mrs. C.E. Westbrook, Willis Westbrook, Station Agent Huntoon, and Dr. Buck attended the races at Abilene this week.

The ladies Missionary Society of the Presbyterian Church will meet next Wednesday afternoon at the residence of Mrs. C. Mayes.

Charlie Miller will play an Ocarina solo this evening on the fair grounds at the YMCA concert.
