The “sweat equity” investment in the new Burns Community Building started in earnest Monday as city officials broke ground for the new building before a crowd of Burns residents.

Margaret Jewel will be 92 on Oct. 23.

The Peabody First Baptist Church will hold a “Georgia Lamberson Day” this Sunday, Oct. 18.

Rachel Hall was named Homecoming Queen at the recent Peabody High School Homecoming activities.

The Frame Shop is slowly getting into operation in the Peabody main street building most recently occupied by a children’s dress design shop. Operator Marshall Milsap of Wichita said Tuesday that the shop would begin work, probably this week, with two employees, Shirley Windsor and Janet Oursler.

OCT. 11, 1962

Frederick “Jack” Sebree received word Friday of the death of his younger brother, Bobby Wayne Sebree of Versay, Indiana. Bobby, 18, was injured in an auto accident two weeks ago near his home.

John Jacobs, son of Dr. and Mrs. J. M. Jacobs, has been elected president of the senior class at Baker University where he is a student.

Capt. and Mrs. Dick Davis and family returned home to Ellsworth AFB, Calif. after visiting here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Davis and friends, and at Big Spring, Texas with Mrs. Davis’ family.

Mrs. J. R. Clithero and her mother, Mrs. Sarah Swinhart, visited in Newton one day last week.

Oct. 13, 1887

John Crow has resigned his position as night watchman on account of insufficient pay.

Services at the Presbyterian Church were dismissed yesterday on account of dampness. An attempt to build a fire was made resulting in a great deal of smoke in the auditoriums.

On account of the cold, damp weather, the public schools were dismissed with the exception of the primary room, it being heated with a stove.
