Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

APRIL 9

10:06 a.m. — A 57-year-old man having trouble with an inhaler in the 200 block of W. Main St. in Burns was checked by Marion ambulance attendants and Burns first responders. He declined to be taken to a hospital.

4:07 p.m. — A 59-year-old woman with high blood pressure and a headache in the 300 block of N. Spruce St. in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance. Medics had to ask for the address, which dispatchers did not initially provide. A first responder aboard Peabody ambulance provided initial evaluation.

9:20 p.m. — A woman who reported being choked during a domestic dispute in the 900 block of N. Vine St. in Peabody was checked by a first responder aboard Peabody ambulance. She declined to be taken to a hospital. A call to Hillsboro ambulance was canceled.

APRIL 10

1:21 p.m. — A patient with an obstructed bowel at St. Luke Hospital in Marion was scheduled to be transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. The transfer was postponed after a subsequent emergency call was received. The patient ended up going by a privately owned vehicle.

1:36 p.m. — One of two people trapped in wreckage after a three-vehicle accident at US-56 and K-15 / Holly Rd. was taken in critical condition to Wesley by Marion ambulance. Hillsboro and Marion rescue squad members helped extricate two drivers. One of them and the driver of a third vehicle declined to be taken to a hospital. Hillsboro firefighters, Hillsboro ambulance, and the county ambulance director also were dispatched. Tampa ambulance stood by in Hillsboro in case of additional calls. Hillsboro police and a sheriff’s deputy normally assigned to the jail directed traffic for nearly two hours. The accident initially was reported as involving only two vehicles with only one person entrapped.

2:52 p.m. — A 43-year-old woman with leg pain at a house in Durham was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance. Tampa ambulance again stood by at the Hillsboro station in case of additional calls.

3:43 p.m. — A grass fire ignited by welding south of 190th and Goldenrod Rds. was extinguished within half an hour by Hillsboro firefighters.

10:46 p.m. — A confused woman with an injured leg along US-77 near 50th Rd. was taken by Marion ambulance to Susan B. Allen Hospital, El Dorado. The ambulance returned to Marion at 12:33 a.m.

11:01 p.m. — A male neurology patient was transferred from St. Luke to Wesley by Hillsboro ambulance. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 1:43 p.m.

THURSDAY

11:43 a.m. — Marion ambulance responded to what appeared to be accidental activation of a medical alarm on behalf of a 96-year-old man at a farmhouse near 140th and Quail Creek Rds.

6:02 p.m. — A 67-year-old woman with back and rib pain after a fall in the 200 block of E. 2nd St. in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

9:22 p.m. — A natural gas odor at a farmhouse near 210th and Jade Rds. was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been caused by a small leak near a meter. An Atmos Energy crew was summoned to repair it the next morning.

FRIDAY

8:07 a.m. — A 30-year-old man who suffered a seizure at Tabor College’s cafeteria in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

2:04 p.m. — A 69-year-old man vomiting at the county jail was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

2:20 p.m. — A gas meter struck by a vehicle in the 700 block of N. Sycamore St. in Peabody was checked by Peabody firefighters. No leaking was detected.

4:19 p.m. — An intentional grass fire that grew out of control near 60th and Upland Rds. was brought back under control within two hours by Peabody firefighters. They initially had trouble determining which of two fires in the area was out of control.

5:28 p.m. — A power pole fire that ignited neighboring grass at Spur Ridge Vet Hospital in Marion was extinguished within 10 minutes by Marion firefighters and Spur Ridge employees.

5:51 p.m. — A 92-year-old woman who fell at a home in the 300 block of W. 11th St. in Florence was helped up by Marion ambulance attendants and Florence firefighters after she activated a medical alarm. She declined to be taken to a hospital.

6:32 p.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred by Marion ambulance to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Marion at 9:12 p.m. and immediately reported to St. Luke to complete another transfer.

7:48 p.m. — What was reported as a box on fire in a front yard in the 500 block of S. Freeborn St. was determined by Marion firefighters to be a barbecue grill.

8:07 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance met an air ambulance crew at Hillsboro airport to transfer a patient from Hillsboro Community Hospital. The ambulance returned to its station at 10:01 p.m.

9:12 p.m. — A 69-year-old man having withdrawal seizures was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Marion at 12:12 a.m.

9:24 p.m. — A lone attendant aboard Peabody ambulance evaluated a bleeding person after what appeared to be a drunken domestic dispute in the 800 block of Poplar St. in Peabody. The patient declined to be taken to a hospital.

SATURDAY

7:20 a.m. — A 78-year-old woman who fell, hit her head, and suffered a nosebleed at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

7:52 p.m. — A man having trouble breathing in the 400 block of S. Main St. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

10:14 p.m. — Marion firefighters and a sheriff’s deputy checked a neighbor’s report of a fire alarm going off inside a locked home in the 200 block of S. Cedar St. in Marion and determined that it was caused by a faulty smoke detector.

11:25 p.m. — After initially being dispatched to transfer the patient they had just taken to HCH, Hillsboro ambulance was redirected along with Durham first responders to check for injuries reported after a domestic disturbance in the 700 block of Lawrence Ave. in Durham. One person declined to be taken to a hospital. A second, emotionally disturbed person was taken to HCH by sheriff’s deputies with ambulance attendants following them.

SUNDAY

12:54 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance completed its interrupted transfer from HCH to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 3:19 a.m.

10:54 a.m. — A 66-year-old man was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley’s cardiac intensive care unit. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 2:04 p.m.

7:49 p.m. — Smoke reportedly coming from under a vehicle in a parking lot at Tabor College was checked by Hillsboro firefighters and determined not to pose a fire hazard.

8:55 p.m. — An unstable 90-year-old woman with head and neck injuries was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Marion at 11:48 p.m.

9:18 p.m. — Fire in a brush pile created during a county cleanup of hedge rows east of 10th and Old Mill Rds. was contained within 45 minutes by Peabody firefighters.

MONDAY

5:27 a.m. — A person having chest pains and trouble breathing in the 800 block of N. Poplar St. in Peabody was taken to St. Francis by Hillsboro ambulance. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 8:23 p.m.

9:49 a.m. — A 93-year-old woman with stroke-like symptoms was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to HCH from Salem Home, Hillsboro.

7:42 p.m. — A 78-year-old man who fell at a home in the 600 block of N. Elm St. in Peabody was helped up by others before a lone first-responder in Peabody ambulance arrived. A dispatcher apologized for forgetting to call the responder. Hillsboro ambulance was told to stand down.
