Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:
APRIL 29
12:22 p.m. — An ammonia odor at Cooperative Grain and Supply in Marion was determined by Marion firefighters to have been caused by workers intentionally bleeding off vapor.
6:29 p.m. — A US-56 motorist’s report of a grass fire south of the county lake was determined by Marion firefighters to have been a reported and contained controlled burn off US-77.
APRIL 30
12:07 a.m. — A 67-year-old woman having trouble breathing at a rental home in the 100 block of N. Roosevelt St. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.
4:30 p.m. — A 77-year-old man having chest pains and trouble breathing at a home in the 300 block of Roosevelt Ave. in Tampa was taken to Salina Regional Health Center by Hillsboro ambulance. Tampa ambulance arrived within five minutes and provided care until Hillsboro ambulance arrived 14 minutes later.
5:13 p.m. — Marion ambulance returned to the 100 block of N. Roosevelt St. in Marion where a 67-year-old woman again was having trouble breathing and again declined to be taken to a hospital.
6:28 p.m. — For a third time, Marion ambulance was sent to the 100 block of N. Roosevelt St. in Marion, this time taking the 67-year-old woman to St. Luke Hospital, Marion.
7:12 p.m. — Marion ambulance was called to St. Luke to help with an unspecified patient. Ninety minutes later, the ambulance reported that it was transferring an unspecified patient on an emergency basis from St. Luke to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.
7:48 p.m. — A motorist’s report of hay bales on fire 100 feet from a structure south of the US-56/77/K-150 roundabout was determined by Marion firefighters and a sheriff’s deputy to have been unauthorized but controlled burning of 20 bales of hay 20 feet from a structure four miles east of there on Zebulon Rd. south of K-150.
THURSDAY
1:57 p.m. — A 72-year-old woman who fell several days earlier and developed hip pain at Homestead Affordable Housing in Marion was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Marion ambulance.
3:23 p.m. — A 21-year-old man complaining of back pain after a two-pickup accident on US-50 at Old Mill Rd. was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance, which arrived 21 minutes after the initial call. Three other people involved in the wreck declined to be taken to a hospital. Three horses in a trailer pulled by one of the pickups also were reported to be uninjured. Marion ambulance and Peabody firefighters were initially dispatched, but when it was learned that Marion ambulance had not yet completed its call to Wichita, Tampa ambulance, 31 miles away, was dispatched instead. The call for Tampa ambulance later was canceled, but the ambulance stood by in Hillsboro until Marion ambulance returned to the county.
FRIDAY
8:53 a.m. — A fire alarm at Westview Manor, which experienced multiple false alarms a week earlier, again was determined by Peabody firefighters to have been a false alarm. The alarm system reportedly is being repaired.
3:14 p.m. — An 82-year-old man with too much potassium in his blood was transferred by Marion ambulance from Hillsboro Community Hospital to Ascension Via Christi St. Teresa Hospital, Wichita. Hillsboro ambulance initially was dispatched, but attendants changed the call to Marion ambulance after they arrived at HCH.
5:43 p.m. — An 85-year-old man having trouble breathing at farmhouse near 150th and Kanza Rds. was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance. With Marion ambulance still on its call to Wichita, Tampa ambulance was ordered to stand by at US-56 and Nighthawk Rd. until 7:30 p.m. in case of additional calls.
SATURDAY
11:21 a.m. — A 53-year-old woman throwing up at a home in the 100 block of E. 9th St. in Florence was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.
5:14 p.m. — A controlled burn at 130th and Sunflower Rds. grew out of control, jumped the road, and led sheriff’s deputies to close Sunflower Rd. The fire was brought back under control within half an hour by Marion firefighters.
6:26 p.m. — After conferring with Marion ambulance attendants, dispatchers assigned Hillsboro ambulance to transfer from St. Luke to Wesley a 61-year-old woman with an unspecified medical condition.
7:34 p.m. — Fire in a ditch on 120th Rd. just west of Goessel was extinguished within a minute by a Goessel firefighter who already was at the location.
SUNDAY
1:15 a.m. — An 88-year-old woman was transferred by Hillsboro instead of Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.
2:56 p.m. — A 75-year-old man who fell and hurt his leg and hip at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.
5:05 p.m. — A LifeSafe helicopter ambulance landed at St. Luke and then HCH but did not appear to transport any patients.
6:54 p.m. — A 90-year-old woman having trouble breathing at a home near 190th and Kanza Rds. was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance. Marion ambulance also responded but was told it was not needed before it arrived.
11:43 p.m. — A 57-year-old man with chest pains in the 600 block of W. Cemetery Ln. in Burns was taken to Wesley by Marion ambulance, which arrived at his address 27 minutes after the initial call.
MONDAY
10:55 a.m. — At the request of a firefighter who works there, Marion firefighters determined that smoke inside the county shops at 142 N. Coble St. in Marion was the result of a cooking mishap.
3:34 p.m. — A 79-year-old man receiving chemotherapy and too weak to get up at a home in the 200 block of Chicago Ave. in Lost Springs was taken to St. Luke by Tampa ambulance. A Lincolnville first responder arrived within 14 minutes and provided care until the ambulance arrived 11 minutes later. Marion ambulance also was dispatched, initially was told the patient was 39 instead of 79 years old, and then was told it would not be needed.
6:01 p.m. — Tampa ambulance briefly stood by during a domestic dispute near 290th and Remington Rd. but was not needed.
