Evelyn Mae Ollenberger

SALINA — Evelyn Mae Ollenberger, 93, of Salina, completed her journey to heaven on November 24, 2012. Evelyn was born in Durham, Kan., on Nov. 24, 1919.

Survivors include her husband of 72 years, Leslie; her daughter, Rosemary Hawver of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter, Sydney Teeter of San Diego, Calif.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

After graduating from Durham High School, Evelyn attended Wichita Beauty College, then started her beautician’s career in Marion, Kan. At Marion’s roller skating rink, “the cute way she wore her socks” caught the eye of Leslie Ollenberger, whom she married on Oct. 14, 1940.

Evelyn pursued her beautician’s career in Marion, Junction City, and Salina. In her spare time, Evelyn loved to sew, tailoring stylish clothes and stitching beautiful quilts. Evelyn also loved to bake. Her many friends and family enjoyed her cinnamon rolls, German specialties, and legendary apple pies.

Evelyn’s motto was, “Whatever happens, I make the best of it.” As Evelyn slowly fell prey to Alzheimer’s disease, she assured her family that, “I know where I’m going, so don’t worry about me.”

Today we know that she is with her beloved Savior, who was with her every step of the way during her long and productive life. Today we rejoice that Evelyn has a bright new mind and youthful body that can once again dance to lively, heavenly polkas.

A memorial service for Evelyn will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Salina First Baptist Church, 843 Lewis Ave., where Les and Evelyn were longtime members. Memorial contributions can be made either to Salina First Baptist Church or Presbyterian Manor and may be left at or sent in care of Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth St., Salina, KS 67401.
