Peabody Senior Center will host Gayla Ratzlaff of the Marion County Area Agency on Feb. 8 to assist seniors with filing The Homestead Tax, Food Tax, and LIEAP tax. Her visit works best when interested members have an appointment scheduled in advance.

“Anyone interested in her assistance can schedule an appointment by calling us at (620) 983-2226,” said Ruth Lott, center site manager. “There also is income tax filing assistance through the Marion office by calling (620) 382-3580 for an appointment.”

On Tuesday, the center will have Leslie Sweasy, of Harden Hospice as a guest speaker. Harden Hospice is the new name of the former Hospice of Kansas. Sweasy will have valuable information about future care that will be helpful to seniors and their families.

“Lenten Services will begin on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 13. All the local pastors will participate in the services along with other spiritual leaders in the community,” Lott said. “We always are blessed by these devotions each Wednesday. We hope folks will join us.”

Lott also noted that February birthdays will be celebrated at the center on Feb. 12.

“Anyone planning on coming should get their reservation in early,” she said. “The speaker for that day will be Dr. Whitely and he will speak on Parkinson’s disease. This disease is becoming more prevalent in younger people as well as seniors.”

The center also has commodities left from the January distribution. Anyone qualifying member who did not pick up an allotment is reminded to do so between 9 a.m. and noon, Monday through Friday at the center at 106 N. Walnut.

Lunch is served at 11:45 each day and reservations are needed to be sure the staff prepares enough food.

Call the center at (620) 983-2226 to reserve a meal. After hours, leave a message on the answering machine. Meals are a suggested contribution of $3.15 for those 60 or older. All others are welcome to eat a balanced meal with a drink and dessert for $5.00.

Volunteers also are appreciated at the center. Anyone with a few hours to give is welcome to help in any of several capacities. Contact Lott at (620) 983-2226 or stop by the center at 106 N. Walnut for more information.
