Fireworks to highlight Labor Day

The Florence Labor Day organizers met July 23 to plan the 77th annual Labor Day celebration Aug. 30 through Sept. 1.

An 1860’s vintage baseball game will feature the Howe House Griffins vs. the Harvey Boys. Festivities will begin at 6 p.m. Aug. 31. A watermelon-seed-spitting contest will follow the game. A 30-minute fireworks display will end the day.

Two new musical groups will be performing Aug. 30. The Alternates will perform. The street dance will feature The Classic Cowboys.

The first clue in a new scavenger hunt will be available the morning of Aug. 30 at the information booth on Main Street. The first person to find a hidden medallion will win $77.

Organizers are seeking entries for the annual Labor Day parade. This year’s theme will be “Jewel of the Cottonwood — Find Your Treasure in Florence, Kansas.” The winning float will receive $100; second place, $75; third, $50. Best classic car or truck will win $50.

For more information or to enter a float contact Melvin Honeyfield, (620) 382-6434.
