Freshman runner qualifies for state

Staff writer

Peabody-Burns High School freshman Sarah Spencer will make an appearance Friday at the state 1A track meet at Wichita State University.

Spencer placed third in the 3200-meter race with a time of 13 minutes, 47.12 seconds.

“Sarah ran a personal record in qualifying,” head coach Brian Simmonds said. “It is very exciting for Sarah to qualify for state as a freshman. I’m looking forward to seeing what she can do.”

While Spencer was the only Peabody-Burns track athlete who qualified for state, Simmonds commended sophomore Caleb Vancuren on his sixth-place finish at regionals with a personal record of 2 minutes, 18.94 seconds in the 800-meter race.

“Caleb was able to move up two spots from an eighth-place qualifying time,” said Simmonds. “I am always proud of a track athlete that gives it their all, and while coming up short of his goal of state qualifier, he finished with his best performance of the season, making him a true champion.”
