Hillsboro Senior Center volunteer fills pie with love

Staff writer

When Hillsboro Senior Center needed just one more pie for its fundraising social event Aug. 9, Jeri Klose knew she had the perfect homemade apple pie recipe to fill the need.

Complete with flaky crust topped with cinnamon, quarter-chopped apples tossed in cinnamon and sugar, and a whole lot of love, Klose’s apple pie helped fill the hole in a table topped with pumpkin, peach, and pecan-filled pies.

And the pies went quick, as they were served with homemade vanilla ice cream from a silver ice cream pail immersed in the ice of a big, blue bucket.

The event, which was standing room only, raised money for the senior center with a suggested $8 donation. Music by Bob and The Boys filled the room as seniors and guests socialized and enjoyed sloppy joes, ice cream, and pie.

“I make lots of different kinds of pies, but apple always seems to be a hit,” said Klose, who volunteers at the senior center two to three times a week. She has volunteered weekly for about four years, but she also volunteered at the center with her husband in the mid-80s.

“I enjoy the camaraderie of everyone here, and the social aspect,” she said.

And while Klose could have bought the last pie that was needed from a local grocery store, she said she did not even consider that an option because she knew it would not taste the same, and she would not take nearly as much pride in a store bought- pie.

“Homemade pies are made with love,” she said.
