HOPE IN THE HEARTLAND:   Jesus and junk

Gracepoint Church, Peabody

I stared at the plump trash bag with a mixture of embarrassment and revulsion. Why did I keep all the junk?

It all started when I decided to clean the desk and bookshelf in my home office. I’d crammed papers, books, mail, and other items (how old was that half empty bag of cheese puffs?) into every nook and cranny. Something had to be done. Company was coming.

So I painstakingly cleaned each area and got rid of “junk” … an entire trash bag full. When I finished — and got over the contents of said trash bag — I looked at my workspace and felt great. It was usable again. I felt free. We’ve all had similar experiences with a desk, kitchen, garage, or some other room.

But often people overlook the most important place: their conscience. Past sins, present regrets, and worries about the future overwhelm them. Their life becomes filled with burdens too numerous to count.

And the only One Who can clean that area is Jesus. He said, “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.” Let Jesus deal with the junk, and you will know true freedom.
