Lawrence Foose, 90, of rural Cedar Point, died Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at his home in rural Cedar Point.

The son of Elmer Ray and Ella Birdie (Stevenson) Foose, Lawrence was born May 14, 1927, in Matfield Green. He graduated from Matfield Green High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Lawrence started working with his dad on the railroad during high school. When he returned after serving in the Army, he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for 45 years as a machine operator.

Lawrence married Hope Bastin. She preceded him in death in 1958. He married Harriette Louise Ayers on Dec. 23, 1977, in Cedar Point.

He was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Lodge 2045. He enjoyed gardening, including planting trees, and fishing. After his retirement he spent many hours working on woodworking projects.

Lawrence is survived by his wife, Harriette, of the home; a sister, Verla McCabe of Topeka; two stepsons, Timothy Starkey of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, and Paul “P.R.” Starkey of Goessel; three stepdaughters, Sharon Williams and Sue Markley and her husband, Darvin, of Marion, and Rene Starkey of Florence; 10 step-grandchildren; and 15 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; and a brother, Donald Foose.

A celebration of life graveside service with military honors was Saturday at Matfield Green Cemetery.
