LaVern Loewens of Hesston died April 19, just three days shy of his 96th birthday. A memorial service was held Sunday at Hesston Mennonite Brethren Church.

Loewens was pastor of Marion Mennonite Brethren Church in 1965 and 1966, then was administrator of Parkside Homes in Hillsboro for nine years.

His wife, Amanda, died in August.

He enjoyed vocal music and played the violin, viola, cello, and trumpet. He tuned and refinished pianos. His many hobbies included woodworking, tropical fish, gardening, stockbroker, and writer.

Survivors include two daughters: Marabeth Busenitz of West Lafayetta, Indiana, and Rosemary Prieb of Hesston; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
