LaVonne Rose Gillet Ammeter was born March 21, 1930, to Roy Gillet and Hester (Clark) Gillet. LaVonne was the second of three siblings: Yvonne, who died at age 3 before LaVonne was born, and Donald. The family lived on a farm near Peabody for a few years and then moved to Summit Township. LaVonne graduated from Burns High School.

While attending high school, LaVonne met the love of her life, Sherwin Ammeter. They were united in marriage on Jan. 15, 1948. LaVonne and Sherwin were blessed with four children: Myron, Melody, Blaine, and Stanley. They lived in rural Butler County for a short time before moving to a farmstead in Summit Township.

LaVonne was a homemaker. She kept busy cooking, gardening, and caring for her family. She always made time to help others and loved quilting with the Summit Ladies Aid and attending Twentieth Century Club meetings. LaVonne loved to visit and had a way about her that made those around her feel comfortable and valued.

LaVonne was very ambitious. She was a self-taught decorator of cakes for all occasions. This grew into a thriving home-based business that she enjoyed for many years. During this same time she also hung wallpaper, working with several ladies in the community. Their expertise kept them busy and in demand.

LaVonne was always an active participant in any community or church event. She was a devoted member of the Summit United Methodist Church until it closed.

Due to a rapid decline in her health and mobility, LaVonne moved to Peabody Care Center in November 2012. She passed away March 7, 2013.

LaVonne was preceded in death by her husband, Sherwin, a sudden loss from which she never fully recovered.

Also preceding her were her parents, sister, and brother, Yvonne and Donald, and granddaughter, Melissa Ammeter.

Those left behind to celebrate her life include her children: Myron and wife Sally Ammeter of Manhattan, Kan., Melody and husband Steve Magette of Ellsworth, Kan., Blaine and wife Carol Ammeter of Ellinwood, Kan.; and Stan Ammeter of rural Burns; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Carolyn Holm of Wichita and Kathryn Ireland of Newton; and extended family and friends too numerous to mention.

LaVonne’s life was celebrated with a service at 1 p.m. Monday, March 11, at the United Methodist Church in Peabody. Family also received friends who wished to share memories from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 10, at Baker Funeral Home in Peabody.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Burns Community Center, Peabody Senior Center, or a memorial of the donor’s choice.
