Learning doesn’t stop in summer

The school year may be over, but some people still are finding time for the classroom. Three classes are being offered this summer at Butler of Marion.

A certified nurses aide training class of 10 students met Monday for the first time. They will meet from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. four days a week and will complete the course by mid-July. The hands-on portion of the course will be done at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro.

Butler director Amy Kjellin said the CNA class is especially helpful, as it provides needed services for people in the county in long-term care. Students range in age from high school to adults in their 40s and 50s.

Kjellin said oftentimes the younger students use their nurse aide training as a stepping stone to a career in nursing.

College algebra and English Composition I classes meet two days a week from 6 to 9 p.m. Kjellin said college students on summer break, as well as high school students, take advantage of these classes.

She said Butler of Marion would open for the fall semester in a new location in the Marion area.

“There will be plenty of classroom space for everyone,” she said.
