New subdivision at lake ready for development

Planning and Zoning Director Tonya Richards and developer Gary Dunnegan met Monday with commissioners, discussing the status of a future subdivision planned at the county lake.

Richards said a plat for the area, to be called Saddle Creek Estates, had already been approved by the planning commission board.

Commissioners approved the plat with the exception that the road by Lakeshore Drive going into the subdivision remains private, with public access. The road previously had to be re-examined because of issues with the floodplain.

Commissioners also approved the re-zoning of the land from agricultural to residential.

“We’re really happy the commissioners approved it,” Dunnegan said. “There’s a lot of demand for lots up there, just not many lots.”

He felt development could begin within 60 days.

“Hopefully we’ll have a couple of families that want homes built in there,” he said.

In other business:

  • After speaking with emergency manager Randy Frank, commissioners decided to rescind the burn ban that was in place in the county.
  • Commissioners approved the $27,338 purchase of a 2015 F-350 1-ton truck from Hillsboro Ford for the weed department. After meeting for a five-minute executive session, commissioners allowed director Rollin Schmidt to use more than 60 hours of off time by the end of March.
  • Commissioners decided to carry forward with another year of health coverage from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas for county workers.
  • Park and lake superintendent Steve Hudson informed commissioners of a new heater donated by Buster Stuts of Eagle Plumbing and Heating in McPherson. He installed the new heater at no cost, which includes a timer to save energy.
  • Commissioners approved a one-year salary change for treasurer office assistant Rhonda Curry from $2,669 to $2,773 monthly.
