I just did my taxes. Myself. My scalp hurts. And I have less hair than when I started the process. Bummer.
I owe the government a few pennies, which they will expect to be paid. And not in monopoly money or chocolate coins. Barbarians. Since I’m probably not going to find anyone who will step forward and pay my taxes for me, it looks like I’m going to have to make the payment myself.
But I had a worse debt than my taxes. It was the debt the sin brought. And the justice of Almighty God expected it to be paid. In full. I can’t do it. Neither can you. The debt hangs over our heads like a giant bolder on a fraying rope.
We’d be in eternal trouble if it were not for Jesus Christ. He stepped forward by entering our world in Bethlehem, eventually offering to pay the debt for our sins on a cross at Calvary. Then He carried the bill — stamped “paid in full” — to heaven with Him when he rose from the dead on Easter morning. But we must believe in Him.
