PBHS boys lose lead in home opener

Despite a competitive first half, Peabody-Burns High School boys’ basketball lost its Friday home opener to Chase County 57-44. The team next will travel to Marion for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday games in the Marion Classic.

The team will compete at 5:30 p.m. Thursday against Eureka. The squad then has an 8:15 p.m. tipoff against Remington Friday. Saturday’s competition will be determined by results of pool play on Thursday and Friday.

A fast-paced first quarter ended with the Warriors up by two, 11-9. Braxton Kyle led with 4 points, and Kevin Baatrup, Xavier Jabary, and Kaden Gibson each added 2 points. Junior Edmondson also made a free throw.

Chase County out-paced the PBHS scoring by one in the second. With the addition of 11, The Bulldogs closed the gap to one at the half. Warrior offense scored 10 with 5 from Garret Schroeder. Kyle added a three-pointer and Jabary a 2-point basket. PBHS led 21-20 at the break.

Peabody-Burns’ defense struggled in the third during a scoring surge for the Bulldogs. The visitors scored 20 points, taking a 40-34 lead into the final period.

Edmondson led PBHS with 5. Vince Newman made a three and Nick Preheim added a two-point basket plus one from the free-throw line. A two from Baatrup rounded out the PBHS scoring.

The Bulldogs continued to roll in the fourth quarter, scoring another 17 points. Schroeder led PBHS with 3 points. Gibson and Baatrup each made baskets.

Edmondson, Jabary and Newman each contributed a free throw. The Warriors lost the home opener 57-44.

Schroeder led the team with 8 points. Edmondson and Kyle each had 7. Baatrup added 6 and Jabary added 5.

Newman and Gibson scored 4 points each, and Preheim had 3. Kolton Schenker led the Bulldogs with 25 points.
