Residents are encouraged to take advantage of Peabody’s spring cleanup week to get rid of items they no longer want. Cleanup week begins Monday and continues through May 9, with curbside pickup May 8. Items for pickup may be moved to the curb beginning Sunday.
“This is a service the city provides twice a year,” City Clerk Stephanie Lago said. “It is a chance for everyone to get rid of large bulky items or accumulations of things they no longer need.”
Lago asked that people taking advantage of the cleanup service follow a few rules.
The service does not include picking up yard or plant waste or building materials such as concrete blocks, lumber, or Sheetrock.
“Residents may take leaves and yard waste to the burn pit on South Olive St.,” Lago said. “Demolition and construction material can be taken to Marion County Transfer Station at 320 W. Santa Fe in Marion. An advance phone call to the transfer station is necessary. Call (620) 382-5655.
“People also need to remember the three B’s — box, bag, or bundle,” she said. “Putting loose items in trash bags or boxes or tying them in bundles works best for the people who are picking them up. Items that are left loose and tossed in a heap will not be hauled away.”
Carpet should be rolled and bound in rolls no longer than four feet.
“The cleanup week pickup is for small quantities of carpet only, not a full house-load,” Lago said.
Appliances will be removed as long as they contain no refrigerants. Air conditioners, freezers, and refrigerators will not be picked up.
Tires will be picked up if advance arrangements are made with Lago at the city building. The cost of tire removal will be added to the next utility bill.
A dumpster will be available after 4 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday and from 8 to 11 a.m. on May 9 at the corner of Olive and First Sts.
Also on May 9, a hazardous waste crew will have a collection site from 9 to 11 a.m. at First and Vine Sts. They will take leftover paint, cleaning supplies, chemicals, and other items that should not go into a landfill.
