HOPE IN THE HEARTLAND:   Religion and policitics

Gracepoint Church, Peabody

Folks will say, “We can discuss anything under the sun … except religion and politics,” as if those two things were cut from the same cloth. Newsflash: They’re not the same thing at all.

Christianity looks at the above statement and responds in a couple of ways. We simply can’t allow Christianity to be lumped together with every other “religion” in the world. That’s not our decision, that’s God’s. The Bible says that Jesus is the only way to heaven. So if we live in obedience to the Lordship of Jesus, we then have a suitable framework that impacts the way we approach politics.

Another way Christianity approaches the above statement is to respectfully say that truth, not personal comfort, determines what topics are open for discussion. Sometimes we need to talk about hard things. If there’s a Biblical principle involved, then a Christian must speak out — in love expressed through carefully chosen words. But if there isn’t a Scriptural principle, then Christians should still feel free to share their thoughts, but do so with humility.

Politics are temporary. Christianity is forever.
