Peabody-Burns USD 398 had school Friday despite a bomb threat made Feb. 14 at Peabody-Burns Junior/Senior High School.

On Feb. 21, Superintendent Ron Traxson sent parents of students a letter about the threat. No information was provided to local or regional news outlets.

“A threat was written on a PBJSHS restroom stall that on March 1st ‘the building would be blown up,’” Traxson wrote in the letter. “The restroom was immediately locked and the Peabody Police Department was contacted.”

The district investigated multiple students Feb. 15 and 19 — Feb. 18 was an in-service day. The investigation also included review of video surveillance. Based on the investigation, a student was suspected of writing the threat. That student was suspended, the letter said.

“It is important to understand that in situations such as this, anyone found responsible for such a threat will face long-term suspension or expulsion from school and may be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” the letter said.

Although the letter said administrators were confident in their identification of the threat, the building was searched before school Friday.

“School administration, in coordination with local and county law enforcement, will conduct a safety protocol with staff and students entering the building,” the letter said.

Police were on the school campus as students arrived Friday morning.

The letter said that parents of students who attend PBJSHS could hold their children out of school Friday. Any missed work would have to be made up, but it wouldn’t be counted as an unexcused absence.
