HOPE IN THE HEARTLAND:   Simple complexity

Gracepoint Church, Peabody

Christianity is the most complex simple lifestyle in the world. There are basic truths that even a child can understand, and there are depths of understanding that require a lifetime to explore.

It isn’t that way with “religion.” Many people master the ins and outs of religious activity, and that routine guides them for the rest of their lives. They know the lingo and the basic requirements for keeping up appearances.

So did the Pharisees in the time of Christ.

“Religion” can be a rather low-maintenance activity, requiring a few key observances and the occasional offering. Christianity begins with one basic requirement: Surrender my life to the Lord Jesus Christ who died for my sins and rose from the dead. Then all I have to do is take up the cross and die daily. I’m to see the Bible as the Word of God, and not a paperweight. And I’m encouraged to pray because God hears me, and not because people see me.

Yep … Christianity can be the most complex simple lifestyle in the world.

But it’s also the only lifestyle God accepts.
