Volleyball splits matches at Centre

The Peabody-Burns Lady Warriors volleyball team added a victory and a loss Sept. 24 at Centre. The squad defeated Wakefield 25-14 and 25-22 but lost to Centre 25-12 and 25-14. Up next for regular season play is a home match with matches against Elyria Christian and Solomon.

Wakefield

Game one had points early with kills from Katy Benson and Alyssa Brooks. Brooks added a block and 2 aces. Benson added another kill for the 12-4 margin that favored PBHS. Brianna Larsen got in the action with 2 kills and Jordan Gibson and Benson each added aces for the 19-6 lead. Kaycy Gonzalez, Rylie McDowell, Cierra Foth and Brooks closed out the match with Lady Warrior points. PBHS won game one 25-14.

Gibson put the Lady Warriors in the lead with 3 aces early in game two. Larsen had 2 kills and PBHS led 6-3. More aces were added by McDowell and Gonzalez. Christa Elliott and Andrea Garcia also recorded kills in the match. Foth took the team to the 29-19 edge and a Gonzalez kill finished the game 25-22.

Centre

The Lady Warriors went up 4-3 on an ace from Foth. Gonzalez and Brooks both added kills and PBHS led 6-3. Centre came back to take the lead but a Benson kill evened the contest at 7. PBHS offense struggled for the remainder of the game and lost 25-12.

Benson got the lady Warriors a point with a kill 2-1. Centre offense went on a roll and lead 10-3 before Gonzalez added a kill. Looking for points, Gonzalez recorded a block and Brooks had a kill and an ace. PBHS lost 25-14.

Olpe tournament

The 2013 Olpe Volleyball Invitational was tough on the PBHS squad Saturday. The varsity team was defeated in all four competitions with losses to Olpe, 25-12 and 25-4; Northern Heights, 25-19 and 25-15; Goessel, 25-7 and 25-16; and Wabaunsee 25-14 and 25-14.

The junior varsity team suffered four losses with defeats by Olpe 25-20 and 25-13; Wabaunsee 25-8 and 25-9; Northern Heights, 25-14 and 25-14; and Goessel 25-14 and 25-14.

The next varsity tournament action will be league Oct. 19 at Hope.
