Warriors fall behind early, can't catch up

In a two minute first quarter burst, Osborne went up 24-0 on the Peabody-Burns Warriors in Bi-District play Nov. 4. Although PBHS came back to within 2 points early in the second quarter, the Warriors fell 66-44. The loss halted the 2014 season with the team record of 9-1.

“You have had an outstanding season,” head coach David Pickens said to his team in the huddle after the game. “You have done something many teams only dream of. It has been a special season. Be proud of yourselves. We are proud of you.”

Osborne picked up 3 scores before Braxton Kyle found Austin Reynolds on a long pass play that ended in the end zone for six. Clayton Philpott caught a Kyle pass for the conversion and PBHS cut the lead 24-8.

Late in the first, Andrew Wedel sacked the Osborne quarterback deep in its own territory. On the first down of the second quarter, Kevin Baatrup returned a Bulldog punt to set up first-and-goal at the Osborne 10-yard line. On second down, Kiefer Larsen got the short 2-yard touchdown to make the score 24-14.

The Bulldogs claimed the next points of the game with a 10-yard run. PBHS trailed 30-14 with 9:08 left in the second quarter.

Philpott fielded the Bulldog kickoff at the Warrior 5-yard line. A Kyle lateral to Philpott put PBHS on the board next with a 75-yard run for a touchdown.

Nicholas Preheim set up the next score with a fumble recovery. Kyle covered 11 yards for the 6 and added 2 on the conversion run. The Warriors closed the gap to 30-28 with 8:38 left in the quarter.

Osborne came right back for a quick score and also another score with 29 seconds left in the half. The Bulldogs led PBHS 42-28 at the half.

Early in the third, Osborne put the next score up and PBHS trailed 52-28.

The Warriors put together a drive that started at their own 15 that included 3 passes to Baatrup that kept the series alive. Baatrup finished the drive with a first-and-goal 9-yard touchdown. Philpott ran the conversion. PBHS closed to with 52-36 with 4:01 left in the third.

Late in the third, the Bulldogs added a score on a 79-yard run. With no time on the clock, Osborne added 2 and led PBHS 60-36.

The Bulldogs got one more score in the contest for a 66-36 edge. PBHS had one more drive that produced points. Kyle took the first down call and went to the Osborne 12-yard line. Philpott ran in the score on the next play. Philpott added the conversion run. With 5 minutes left in the contest PBHS trailed 66-44.

The score remained unchanged when Osborne took a knee to finish the game.

Kyle was 6-for-20 for 116 yards, a score and an interception. Philpott had 11 rushes for 121 yards and 2 scores. Kyle ran 14 times for 73 yards and 1 touchdown. Baatrup had 4 carries for 29 yards and a score. Larsen had 1 carry for 2 yards and the score.

Reynolds had 1 catch for 46 yards and a touchdown. Baatrup caught 6 passes for 75 yards. Kyle caught one pass for 21 yards.

Kyle led the defense with 14 1/2 tackles followed by Kaden Gibson with 9. Philpott earned 6 and Baatrup had 4 1/2. Colton Terronez added 4. Preheim had 3 1/2 and Wedel earned 2 stops.
