CENTRE:   Wiles returns to lead Centre squad

Cougars begin Sept. 6 against Goessel

Staff writer

After retiring from a 25-year teaching and coaching career at Centre schools, Stan Wiles has returned to coach the high school football team.

Wiles assisted longtime football coach Bud Peterson from 1987 until Peterson’s retirement in 2006, and continued as an assistant until his own retirement in 2009. He also was a junior high football coach for many years.

At least 22 students are out for football. The team includes 10 returning letter winners. Senior letter winners are Kyle Methvin, an all-state honorable mention, who is expected to be the quarterback again this year; Karl Riffel, center; Tanner Peterson, lineman; Chad Mueller, lineman; Ty Simons, offensive end; and Terren Thompson, defensive and offensive end.

Junior Dakota Stimpson may play halfback; Justin Bina, end; and Conner Montgomery, back. Sophomore Barrett Smith will play defense.

The other members of the squad are seniors Solomon Brunner, Braden Pagenkopf, Mickey Brubacher, and Nick Salamone; sophomores James Mercer and Bryce Naerebout; and freshmen Daniel Rudolph, Cole Methvin, Greg Oborny, Dylan Deines, James Spohn, and Brendon Bina.

Wiles is assisted by teacher and former coach Kelly Steiner and by student assistant Tim Vinduska.

The season opener is Sept. 6 at home against Goessel.
