Get help with winter heating bills

The Kansas Department for Children and Families will be accepting applications for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program Today through March 29.

The program provides an annual benefit to help qualifying households pay winter heating bills. Individuals with disabilities, elderly persons, and families with children are the primary groups assisted. An average benefit of $520 was provided to 53,683 homes in 2012.

To be eligible a single person can make no more than $1,210 a month, a two-person household can only make $1,639, a three-person household, $2,068, four-person, $2,497, and five-person, $2,926. For each additional person, add $429.

The level of benefit varies according to household income, number of people at the address, type of dwelling, type of heating fuel, and utility rates.
Applicants must also demonstrate they have made payments on their heating bill two of the last three months of at least $80.
