Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:
MAY 5
10:33 a.m. — An 85-year-old woman having trouble breathing at Parkside Homes apartments in Hillsboro was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, by Hillsboro ambulance.
11:29 a.m. — A 71-year-old man with back pain at a farm near 20th and Yarrow Rds. was taken by Marion ambulance on an emergency basis to Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital, El Dorado. Burns first responders arrived within seven minutes and provided care until the ambulance arrived 21 minutes later.
3:32 p.m. — The 85-year-old patient from Parkside Homes was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Ascension Via Christi St. Teresa Hospital, Wichita.
6:01 p.m. — A 76-year-old woman with leg pain in a vehicle outside Jost Funeral Home in Hillsboro was checked by Hillsboro ambulance attendants and an ambulance supervisor but declined to be taken to a hospital.
MAY 6
4:03 a.m. — Hillsboro ambulance and an ambulance supervisor responded to a grandparent’s report of a baby being born in the back seat of a Chrysler 300 at 150th and Old Mill Rds. but could not find the vehicle. The call was switched to a Butler County ambulance after the location turned out to be at NW 150th Rd. and NW Meadowlark Rd. (Old Mill Rd. extended) near Elbing.
1:43 p.m. — A painter who was electrocuted, lost a hand, and fell 30 feet into an alley behind Hillsboro Hardware was taken by Hillsboro ambulance in respiratory and cardiac arrest to Hillsboro Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Rescuers briefly were delayed because power had to be disconnected. An ambulance supervisor, the county ambulance director, and a helicopter ambulance all responded.
3:24 p.m. — A 58-year-old woman with low hemoglobin was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. The call initially went to Marion ambulance but was delayed at an ambulance supervisor’s instructions until Hillsboro ambulance could return to service and arrive at the hospital at 4:18 p.m.
9:12 p.m. — A 58-year-old woman with facial injuries from a domestic incident was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke from a deputy’s squad car at 5th and Main Sts. in Florence. Jail records indicate that a 58-year-old Florence woman was arrested on suspicion of domestic battery and disorderly conduct at approximately that time, but no offense report has been released by the sheriff’s department.
THURSDAY
6:50 a.m. — A 1-year-old girl with trouble breathing at St. Luke was transferred by Marion ambulance to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.
2:17 p.m. — A 70-year-old woman who fell and hurt her hip at a home in the 300 block of E. Grand Ave. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.
4:11 p.m. — After indecision over which ambulance should handle the call, an 84-year-old woman with an obstructed bowel was transferred by Marion ambulance from HCH to Salina Regional Medical Center.
7:54 p.m. — Although Marion ambulance initially was dispatched, a 69-year-old woman with cardiac issues was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from St. Luke to St. Francis.
10:47 p.m. — Marion ambulance informed dispatchers that as soon as Hillsboro ambulance returned it would be transferring an unspecified patient from St. Luke to NMC Health, Newton.
FRIDAY
2:15 a.m. — A 39-year-old woman with low blood sugar at Oakwood Apartments in Hillsboro declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.
8:46 a.m. — A 56-year-old woman who became dizzy and light-headed at the Sports and Aquatics Center in Marion was taken to HCH by Marion ambulance.
11:12 a.m. — At an ambulance supervisor’s request, Peabody firefighters were dispatched to help an uninjured 87-year-old woman who fell from a chair in the 200 block of W. 2nd St. in Peabody. Firefighters helped her up. She eventually was checked by ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital.
2:29 p.m. — Tampa firefighters were asked to provide a tanker to help Roxbury firefighters battle a grass fire near 350th and Eagle Rds., but the call was canceled before the tanker arrived.
6:29 p.m. — A 58-year-old woman in pain after recent back surgery was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance from a home in the 500 block of N. Cedar St. in Marion. Police were called after the woman suffered an apparent hallucination that an ambulance showed up even before Marion ambulance was dispatched.
8:41 p.m. — An uninjured 76-year-old man who fell out of bed in the 400 block of S. 3rd St. in Marion was helped up by Marion ambulance attendants. He declined to be taken to a hospital.
SATURDAY
12:03 a.m. — The 58-year-old woman earlier taken to St. Luke with pain after back surgery was transferred by Marion ambulance to Wesley.
11:36 a.m. — A plaintive cry of “Help me” along with other unintelligible conversation in a young child’s voice was broadcast from a radio registered to a Durham firefighter, but no action was taken.
12:11 p.m. — Another call to the 400 block of S. 3rd St. in Marion for a 76-year-old man who fell resulted this time in the man being taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke.
3:03 p.m. — A 68-year-old man with sepsis was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley.
5:41 p.m. — An unspecified inmate who ingested incorrect medication at the county jail was checked by Marion ambulance attendants and taken by deputies to St. Luke with the ambulance following them.
10:07 p.m. — A 46-year-old woman with abdominal pain was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Wesley.
SUNDAY
12:41 a.m. — A 63-year-old woman with cardiac issues was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health.
3:53 p.m. — A 97-year-old woman who fell and hurt her head and hip at Parkside Homes was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance.
6:58 p.m. — A dehydrated 64-year-old man at a home in the 700 block of N. Cedar St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.
6:59 p.m. — A 66-year-old woman with a swollen abdomen after falling the day before at a home in the 500 block of N. Freeborn St. in Marion was taken on an emergency basis to Wesley by Hillsboro ambulance, filling in for Marion ambulance.
MONDAY
12:24 a.m. — An 85-year-old man with chest pains and cardiac history at a farmhouse near 290th and Pawnee Rds. was taken to Wesley Woodlawn Hospital, Wichita, by Tampa ambulance. Lincolnville first responders arrived within 17 minutes and provided care until the ambulance arrived a minute later. A backup ambulance based in Hillsboro arrived seven minutes after that.
10:14 a.m. — A 78-year-old woman with cardiac and breathing issues at a home in the 200 block of N. Lincoln St. in Hillsboro was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance. An ambulance supervisor and a backup ambulance based in Hillsboro also responded.
1:01 p.m. — A 75-year-old man needing a neurological consultation was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley.
4:17 p.m. — Peabody firefighters spent nearly an hour and a half rescuing a cat stuck in a tree at 6th and Vine Sts. in Peabody.
4:39 p.m. — A 78-year-old woman with cardiac problems was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.
7:49 p.m. — With Marion ambulance still en route back from Wichita, Hillsboro ambulance transferred a 98-year-old woman with a nosebleed from St. Luke to Wesley.
